Surfers Paradise, once known as Elston and close to an area the native Kombumerri people called Jarri Parila, was originally settled as a farm land region in 1869 by a gentleman by the name of James Beattie.
This farm land was then acquired by Johann Mayer, a German immigrant who soon realised the potential of the area as a tourist destination, which would make a few dollars providing accommodation and services to travellers were in order and establishing a ferry and horse and cart service to allow visitors to access the main surf beach. Nowadays, the public transport and accessibility of Surfers Paradise car hire solutions makes travel somewhat easier!
In 1889, a postal address meant the area was officially names Elston, a far cry from the now glamorous, highly appealing and apt name of “Surfers Paradise”. The development and extension of the South Coast Road and the more mainstream use of motor cars brought with it the gradual development of accommodation along the seaside villages that now make up “The Gold Coast.”
It was around 1920 that Jim Cavill bought 25 acres of land in Elston. In 1925 he opened a 16 bedroom hotel along a relatively isolated spot on a stunning white surf beach. He lobbied for years to change the name of Elston to Surfers Paradise and in 1933, was successful.
In the coming years and decades, the area has developed into a holidaymakers paradise. Clean sandy white beaches and world-class facilities including resorts, hotels, restaurants, eateries and shopping are all just moments from a stunning lush hinterland and the world famous theme parks, all of which are easily reached with the highly accessible Surfers Paradise car hire service offered by Cut Price Car Rentals.
